German prisoners housed here remembered by local veteran
During World War II, German prisoners of war were housed at two area locations, in Mattawan, at a camp site on Main Street, where MPI Research now stands, and at the old county fairgrounds, located in downtown Hartford. At Hartford, a group of German POWs, above, were sent to work on the late Harold Sill farm, located southeast of Lawrence.

At Hartford, a group of German POWs, above, were sent to work on the late Harold Sill farm, located southeast of Lawrence.
As the United States was marking it his second year of World War II, the growing need for additional manpower was becoming apparent.
      In Mattawan, during the fall of 1943, a prisoner of war camp (POW) camp was set up at the site now occupied by MPI Research, Inc., on Main Street. Another POW camp was located at the former county fairgrounds in downtown Hartford.

The Blue Star Mothers of Southwest Michigan this weekend will be packing holiday gift boxes to be sent to United States service men and women deployed in other parts of the world.
