The Mattawan girls’ basketball team earned a 48-27 win Friday, Jan 11, over the Lakeshore Lancers. After suffering a few hard losses, the win for the Lady Wildcats seemed long overdue.
Mattawan took an early 11-2 lead after Abigail Owens hit a three-point shot with just under three minutes remaining in the opening quarter. On the defensive end of the court, Mattawan held the Lancers to just six points in the first eight minutes.
The Wildcats extended their lead significantly in the second quarter. Sophomore Abby Schae-fer gave Mattawan a 20-8 lead with a successful two-point drive to the basket, and from that point on, the Wildcat points kept  coming. Gabrielle Reitenour took advantage of a rebound extending the lead once again, and Mattawan went into the locker room at halftime with a comfortable 27-9 lead.
In the third quarter, junior Natalie Foster hit back-to-back buckets, stretching the Wildcat lead to 35-13. The third quarter ended with sophomore Olivia Eubank sinking a free throw to give Mattawan a 20-point advantage with just one quarter left to play.
Early in the final period, Janelle Rupp found Foster under the basket for a layup. Mattawan scored 10 points to cap off the win.
Leading the Wildcats was  Foster with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Izzy Hoffman finished the night with eight points and six rebounds for Mattawan.
