The Mattawan Wildcat football team improved to 2-0 last week after beating Battle Creek Lakeview, 17-3.
Mattawan took an early lead when senior kicker Trevor Schantz made a 32-yard field goal. But the Spartans answered with a field goal of their own to tie the game at three.
In the second quarter, Mattawan took the lead and control of the game. Junior wide receiver Noah Janssen made a touchdown catch, and with the extra point, put the Wildcats up 10-0 with plenty of time left in the first half. Soon after, Janssen intercepted a Lakeview pass to set up the final touchdown of the game. Senior running back Max Huntley carried the ball 89 yards to the endzone. A successful extra point gave Mattawan the 17-3 lead going into halftime.
The second half was wrought with turnovers and penalties for both teams and neither team crossed the goal line in second half.
Still, after the second week of season, Mattawan and Portage Northern remain the only two undefeated teams in the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference west division.  The Wildcats travels to St. Joe tonight (Friday), and will host their next home game September 14 against Niles.
