Etta and Paul Ranger celebrated 78 years of marriage on April 19.

LAWTON - For nearly eight decades, before they retire each  night, a Lawton couple, residents at White Oaks Assisted Living, give each other a  kiss.
It’s something that Paul and Etta  Ranger have been doing since April 19, 1940, as the couple marked their 78th wedding anniversary last month.
“We never go to bed without a kiss goodnight,”said Etta, 95.
Paul, 99, and Etta, formerly of Battle Creek, MI, have been residents at the Lawton facility for the past two years.
Prior to their retirements, Paul was employed in Battle Creek as a tool and die maker, while Etta worked as a credit manager at the Battle Creek Sears’ store.
The two recalled the time they first met on Cherry Street in Battle Creek.
“Paul was very shy,” said Etta. “However, instead of shaking my hand,  he gave me a big kiss,” said Etta, remembering that initial encounter as she and her girlfriend met Paul.
The two were married  soon after at  Etta’s mother’s house.
“Seems like I’ve always been married,” said Etta. “I’ve always been happy because I’ve taught him to say, “yes,” said Etta. “You think I’m kidding, but I’m not.”
The couple has  two  children; two grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
