PAW PAW - On Monday, May 8,  two veteran southwest Michigan law enforcement officers were recognized at the 26th annual Peace Officers Memorial Service at the State Capitol in Lansing, according to a press release from Michigan Concerns of Police Survivors (MI-C.O.P.S.) .
Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office Detective Loren Tarner represented all Michigan officers injured in the line of duty, and recently retired Michigan State Police Sergeant Jim Campbell represented all Michigan’s officers who served to retirement.
On Jan. 17, 2016, then-Dep. Tarner was seriously injured in the line of duty while assisting at the scene of a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 94. Tarner was outside his patrol car helping victims of an earlier crash, when a semi-truck crashed into the scene. The subsequent crash seriously  injured Tarner, but “putting service above self,” according to the press release, he returned to assist others until he was relieved by other members at the scene. After a lengthy recovery period and rehabilitation, Tarner, who has fully recovered, returned to work at the Sheriff’s Office, where today, he serves as a detective in the Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit.
After serving  31 years with the Michigan State Police, Campbell  retired earlier this year. He began his career as a trooper assigned to the Brighton Post in road patrol. He then advanced his career by training to be a traffic crash reconstruction  specialist.
In 1997, Campbell was promoted and transferred to the Fifth District Headquarters, Paw Paw, where he served until his retirement earlier this year.
MI-C.O.P.S. is an all-volunteer 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that supports surviving family and co-workers of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. MI-C.O.P.S. provides survivors access to  support services and programs to help them heal from their loss. MI-C.O.P.S also hosts the annual Peace Officers Memorial Service the first Monday of May each year at the State Capitol in Lansing.
