The Lawrence Tigers’ season ended with a tough, 64-43 loss to the Kalamazoo Phoenix Fury in a semi-final District game. The Tigers traveled to Mendon in hopes of playing for the District crown; but instead, the Fury pulled away in the second quarter, dashing the hopes of the purple and white.
Lawrence kept the game close in the first quarter. The Fury took a quick lead, but freshman Bol Bak cut it down to only five points after fighting his way to the basket. Ethan Payment and Kaleb Smith followed with back-to-back buckets to pull Lawrence to within two points at 11-9. But Kalamazoo Phoenix took advantage of Tigers turnovers and regained a five  point lead by the end of the first quarter.
The trouble really started for the Tigers midway through the second period. The Fury hit several three pointers to take a 12-point lead. Bak was able to cut the lead to 10 points with a layup late in the quarter, but,  Phoenix continued to find success outside the arc, and gained a 33-19 lead over the Tigers at halftime.
Lawrence started off the third quarter with a scoring streak. Brandon Lopez sank a three pointer which helped wittle the Fury’s lead to 33-26, but that was the closest the Tigers got for the remainder of the game. The Fury  again found success with three pointers, and eventually won the game, 64-43.
Leading the Tigers were juniors Lopez and Smith. Lopez finished out the night with 18 points, followed by Smith with 13 points.
