Lawrence 2019 top grads announced

JOSHUA ALBURTUS - ValedictorianVALERIE NORRIS - Salutatorian

    LAWRENCE - Lawrence Public Schools has announced its top graduates for the Class of 2019.
    Joshua Alburtus has been named valedictorian, while Valerie Norris was named salutatorian.
    Among his extra-curricular  activities, Alburtus is the founding member of the LHS Diversity Club, which began two months ago. He is also a Van Buren Technology Center National Technical Honor Society member and a.m. chapter secretary, Van Buren Technology Center DECA Chapter historian, LHS Junior and Senior class treasurer, LHS Marching Band member and Drum Major, Louise Nicholas Chapter of the National Honor Society, LHS Quiz  Bowl team  member and captain, LHS Student Council treasurer, LHS Varsity Cheer Team, Yearbook Committee, Van Buren Technology Center Early Middle College Program, and a member of the cross country and track teams.
    He is also a waiter at Walt   and Marie’s Country Market & Cafe, Paw Paw, and was a Mr. Lawrence  2018 Blossomtime contestant.
    Among his community service and volunteerism, Alburtus has helped with Student Council blood drives, and is a children’s ministry instructor at Freshwater Community Church, Paw Paw.
    Following high school graduation, he  plans  to finish the next year of college education through the Early Middle College Program at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, then transfer to Grand Valley State University, to pursue his bachelor’s degree in multi-media  journalism, with a minor in political science.
    He is the son of  Sherrie and Pete Alburtus.
    Among her extra-curricular activities, Norris was a member of sideline cheer, competitive cheer, cross country, (team captain), basketball (team captain) softball  (team captain),  Science Olympiad, Quiz Bowl, Academic Challenge, National Honor Society, (treasurer) PALs, SAC Leadership, Student Council and the Diversity Club.
    Outside of school, she has participated in travel softball and travel basketball.
    Among her community service and volunteerism, Norris has  been a vacation Bible school teacher, volunteers at pitching clinics, set up for cross country meets, volunteers at pancake breakfasts for softball and cheer, and Lawrence Alumni  Association dinner, referees at rec-league basketball games and volunteers at blood drives.
    She plans to finish her associates’s degree at Southwestern Michigan College, Dowagiac,this fall. Next spring, she plans to attend Ferris State University, Big Rapids, MI, where she will pursue her bachelor’s degree in accounting. Following that, she plans to  attend DePaul University, to pursue her master’s degree in  accounting.
    In 1960, Norris’ grandmother, Carolyn (Marconi) Norris, was named LHS salutatorian.
