Lawton fifth grade science students experience Starbase

Lawton Elementary School teachers reported to their Board of Education this month that their students love the highly engaging activities offered through the fifth grade science experience, Starbase, a STEM educational program housed at the National Guard base in Battle Creek and facilitated by the U.S. Department of Defense.  Activities include computer coding for operation of robots, basic CAD applications, aviation, rocketry and more.  All activities are conducted in a workplace-like environment. With a goal of providing all students with instruction that meets their educational needs, the teachers said Lawton Elementary is maximizing the use of technology to support both remediation and extension. This approach allows teachers to provide more attention to those in need while also allowing students who are ready to progress beyond the expected grade level standards.
