PORTER TWP. - The body of a Lawton man was recovered from a vehicle  found submerged in a Porter Township lake late Tuesday afternoon, according to a press release from the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.
According to Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel Abbott, deputies responded to the Cedar Lake public access, 91000 M-40, Marcellus, at 4:41 p.m. for a vehicle submerged in the water. At the scene, they found a Hyundai Elantra fully under water, approximately 20 yards from the shore with the occupant still inside.
Lawton Fire Department personnel and a wrecker driver were able to commandeer a nearby boat and extricate the occupant from the vehicle prior to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Dive Team’s arrival.
The sole occupant of the vehicle was later identified as John Salvatore Catalino, 59, and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The  Dive Team assisted in hooking up the vehicle to remove it from the lake.
Abbott said an eye witness observed the vehicle go into the lake backwards, and watched it sink. The witness then called 911 to report it.
The incident remains open, pending further investigation.
Assisting at the scene were the Lawton Police, Lawton Quick Response, Michigan State Police, Van Buren Emergency Emergency Medical Services and True’s Towing.
