ALMENA TWP. - With Almena Township’s fire service millage up for renewal in 2020, the Almena Township Board is  working to have fire department contracts discussed, drafted, and ultimately approved by year’s end.
At its Sept. 19 meeting, the township board said it intends to work out a contract mutually agreeable with the three fire departments, Paw Paw, Mattawan Fire District and Gobles Pine Grove, and intends to have an initial draft contract available for consideration and review at the November board meeting.
Also, Township Board member Mark Roman, who presented the township’s Planning Commission re-port, said two public hearings were recently held.
Roman said the zoning ordinance text amendment was approved for recommendation to the township board, and will be sent to the Van Buren County Planning Commission for their opinion.
A special land use permit  for  Shades of Lavender was tabled until the October meeting, as the planning commission board cited more clarification and discussion was needed.
Bill Woodhams inform-ed the township board of  flooding caused by a beaver dam on Campbell Creek.
The township board approved a request from Woodhams to have the beaver dam removed, as determined by a DNR/Wildlife biologist.
Township Supervisor Bill VanTassel said the Township Fall  Clean-Up Day will be  held Oct. 19, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Township Hall.
