Josephine E. Ryan

    Josephine Ellen Ryan, 99, of Kalamazoo, died peacefully,  April 19, 2019. Jo was born Nov.  9, 1919, in Kalamazoo, the daughter of William and Blanch (Harrigan) Ryan.
    Jo enjoyed a fruitful career teaching at Hillside Middle School. She enjoyed traveling all over the world, but Ireland particularly captured her heart. She was also active for many decades in her Catholic Cursillo group where she found many great friendships. Her nightly martini earned Jo the nickname “Martini Lady.” She had a heart of gold and was very generous to those she could help.
    Jo was preceded in death by her brother, Daniel Ryan; her sister-in-law, Annie Ryan; and her lifelong friend, Don O’Toole.
    Surviving are her nephew, Michael (Linda) Ryan; her two  nieces, Katie (Don) Verkow, and Maggie Ryan; one grand-niece, one grand-nephew, one great grand-nephew and four great grand-nieces; and special friends, The Cavanaughs.
    The family visited with friends while sharing food and refreshments, Thursday, April  25, at Betzler Life Story Funeral Home, 6080 Stadium Drive,  Kalamazoo, (269) 375-2900, where a Rosary was recited that evening.
     Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today (Friday, April 26) at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine Cathedral, 542 W. Michigan Ave., Kalamazoo, with a luncheon to follow in the Crowley Center. Cremation will take place following the mass with burial at Riverside Cemetery at a later date.
