On Friday night, the unbeaten Gobles Tigers were looking to bring home some hardware from the District  Championship game against Kalamazoo Christian. But, the Comets came out firing on all cylinders, and the Tigers didn’t know what hit them, and they suffered their only loss of the season, 42-38.
The Tigers found themselves down quickly, 16-3, after the first quarter; but settled down and started to chip away at the K-Christian lead. Gobles outscored the Comets in the second period, 15-9, and trailed 25-18 at the half. Gobles continued to battle back in the second half, and took their first lead of the game, 36-35, with 4:37 remaining.  But, late in the game, with 1:55 left to play and the score knotted at 38 apiece, the momentum switched to Kalamazoo Christian.
The Comets had a couple of steals and made free throws to take the advantage. The Tigers finished a 22-1 season.
“It was a tough night,” said Gobles Coach John Curtis. “The Comets came out ready and jumped out to a double digit lead. We battled back but struggled to rebound and communicate in key situations on defense.
“We still had a chance at the end but came up short,” noted Curtis. “Not the outcome we wanted, but the girls should be proud of their great season.”
Nason scored 11 points. Emily Lopez accounted for nine points and nine re-bounds; Mandigo added seven points and five rebounds; and Tiller, six points and seven rebounds.
Gobles graduates eight seniors from this year’s squad.

The Gobles girls played Bloomingdale in the second round of Districts to earn their spot in the finals matchup. The Tigers hustled their way to a 13-6 first quarter advantage, then turned up the heat on defense to hold the Cardinals scoreless in the second quarter and take a 23-6 lead at the half.  Gobles finished the game out with a 46-21 win to advance to play  Kalamazoo Christian for the trophy.
“I thought we played a solid half-court defense and forced them into tough shots,” noted Coach Curtis. “Offensively, we weren’t clicking, but we did enough to advance.
“Kylee Mandigo did a nice job knocking down some shots and that was huge for us,” Curtis concluded. Mandigo scored 12 points for the Tigers, followed by Christiana Hunt with 10 points and four rebounds, Maddy Tiller with nine points and nine rebounds, and Libbee Nason added seven points.
