PAW PAW - For Paw Paw’s Lady Redskins, Friday evening  can probably best be categorized as agonizing. The home team found a lid firmly in place on the top of the hoop for nearly all of the game, resulting in a 49-17 defeat by Plainwell. The Paw Paw girls launched a total of 36 shots from the field, but a scant four found their way through to the bottom of the net.
Plainwell jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, until two free throws by Morgan Dwyer with three minutes left in the first quarter to finally light up the home side of the scoreboard. Ellie Marger added a triple to put the score at 8-5 going into the second stanza.
The Lady Trojans then went on a 19-0 run, which stretched into a 29-2 streak until three minutes into the third quarter Ellie Marger hit a pair of baskets to stop the bleeding for the home team.
Coach Gary Mitchell attempted every possible combination of players he has, but to no avail. Junior Anna Vavra was not available for the game, and the absence of the team’s leading rebounder and key interior defensive player was evident in the game stats. Plainwell won the rebounding battle, 40-22, and scored 28 points in the paint compared to none for the Reds.
Ellie Marger was team high in the scoring department with eight followed by Dwyer with five, and Emma Kooi and Lillian Fulcher with two apiece. Mercedes Strachan had six boards to lead the defense.
The Lady Redskins now stand 2-9 on the season, with some tough opponents coming up over the next two weeks.
