Mattawan’s District run is short

   The Mattawan Wildcat girls’ basketball team traveled to Portage Central for a chance to play for a Division 1 District title.
   The Wildcats faced Portage Northern in the first round of the tourney, and dominated the game from the very beginning, rolling over the Huskies, 47-6.
   The Mattawan defense held the Huskies to just one point in the opening quarter while scoring 16 on offense. The Wildcats continued to extend their lead in the second half and went into halftime leading the Huskies, 42-4. Portage Northern didn’t score another basket until the fourth quarter giving Mattawan the opening round win.
   Leading Mattawan was junior Natalie Martinic with 14 points and three steals. Junior Sarah Harman finished the game with seven points and two rebounds.
   In the semi-final round of Districts, Mattawan faced Kalamazoo Central, a team that had beaten the Wildcats by seven points earlier in the season.
   Mattawan fought hard during this second meeting but lost, 48-30. The Wildcats trailed by only three points at the end of the first quarter, and held their own until the last period when they were outscored 13-4 by the Maroon Giants.
   Mattawan’s 5’11” junior Natalie Foster dominated the floor, contributing 15 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. The Wildcats finished their season with an overall record of 8-13.
