FENNVILLE - The Gobles football team has struggled with low numbers and injuries this year. The Tigers did not have enough players for a junior varsity team, and are 1-7 on the season. The Tigers continue to practice hard each week as the season comes to an end.
Friday night, the Tigers traveled to Fennville to play the 7-1 Blackhawks, who on their first play from the line of scrimmage, took the ball to pay dirt for an early lead. The Tigers marched the ball down the field in their opening drive, but stalled near the end zone.
Gobles continued to struggle against the talented Blackhawks, and trailed 34-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Caleb Brady scored to put the Tigers on the board, but Gobles lost the game 48-8.
“Injuries have hit the team pretty hard that last couple of weeks,” said Gobles Coach Thad Schafer. “So, we have players in positions that they have not played all year, but the kids step up and do whatever they can.”
Brady had 47 yards on 11 carries for Gobles, followed by teammates Jayden Wyatt with nine carries for 39 yards, and Kevin Chandler with seven carries for 27 yards.
Gobles had a total of 169 yards on offense, compared to Fennville’s 384 total yards.
On defense, Wyatt, Dylan Schafer, and Josh Lopez each had five tackles.
