The Gobles football team traveled to Kalamazoo to play a tough United team. Kalamazoo United was formed in 2014 when Kalamazoo Hackett and Kalamazoo Christian joined forces. United was 8-3 last year and made the playoffs.
Gobles knew it was going to be a tough defensive game. United has outscored their opponents this year 116-7.
“One of our goals this week was to win the turnover margin. Kevin Heard, Dylan Schafer and Malakai Jones each had a fumble recovery,” said Gobles Coach Thad Schafer.
Offensively, the young Gobles team was still looking to punch one in the end zone for a touchdown this season.  That happened in the second quarter when running back Hunter Underwood ran 18 yards to put the Tigers on the board. Gobles trailed 55-6 at halftime.
“We had some kids step up as Heard was our defensive player, Brandon DeVries was our offensive player and Hunter Underwood returned after being out last week due to injury to lead the special teams,” said Coach Schafer.
“Once again, our youth showed. United is a very good team. We just didn’t have the speed to keep up with them,” he continued. “We are making improvements each week, and the boys continue to compete.”
The final score favored the Titans, 62-6.
For Gobles, Underwood had 56 yards on 14 carries, and  DeVries gained 53 yards on eight carries. Defensively, Heard, DeVries, and Jayden Wyatt each recorded three tackles.
Gobles fell to 0-3 on the season.
