GOBLES - The Gobles student body capped off a week of Homecoming activities with a thrilling football game Friday night against the Fennville Blackhawks, and Hunter Underwood was determined to help bring his Tigers a victory.
The Gobles senior rushed for 181 yards and three touchdowns, added five tackles and a fumble recovery, and was in charge of Tiger punting. Though he broke tackles all night and was all over the field on defense, Gobles fell just shy of the win, 28-26, in the closing minutes of the game.
The Tigers struggled in the opening minutes of the game, giving up two turnovers that led to a Fennville score. But, Gobles answered back, scoring on a long run by Underwood. They failed to convert the extra point, and after the first quarter, Gobles trailed, 7-6.
Both teams scored in the second quarter. The Tigers followed their touchdown with a successful two-point conversion to tie the game up at 14-14. It was an evenly matched game with both teams playing hard throughout.
The difference in the game came in the third quarter, each team scored a touchdown, but the Tigers missed their extra point, and Fennville made a two-point conversion.
The game came down to the final minutes when Fennville scored to go up, 28-20.  Gobles scored a touchdown and trailed by two points, but was denied the extra points.
Gobles rolled up 311 total yards, while Fennville  amassed 345.  Defensively, for the Tigers, Andrew Lee had nine tackles, and Dylan Schafer, Brandon DeVries and Josh Lopez each added five tackles. Michael Fifer rushed for 50 yards and had one pass  reception for 39 yards.
“I can’t say enough about this team, that they never give up,” said coach Thad Schafer. “We have a lot of our kids who play both sides of the ball; and even though we came up short on the scoreboard, they definitely did not come up short on grit and heart.”
