Lawrence golfer tops in SAC West

Lawrence golfer, Zach Smith, shot 42 at Pipestone Creek Golf Course on May 12 to win by three strokes and complete a sweep of the season’s Southwestern Athletic Conference West Division matches. Smith, a junior, had six solo first place finishes and one tie for first. He had a scoring average of 42, with his best score of 35 shot at Paw Paw Lake Golf Club.
“Zach was very steady this year,” said Lawrence Golf Coach Scott Sanborn. “I’m especially proud of the resilience he showed during his round at Pipestone Creek. He was five over par after three holes, but then played the final six holes in one over par. That showed some heart.”
Smith and his teammate, Lanndan Copeman, a freshman, will play in the SAC conference tournament on May 24 at Stonehenge (North) Golf Club, and in the regional tournament at Klinger Lake Country Club on May 31.
“In the next two weeks, Zach will be facing some very stiff competition,” Sanborn said. “However, if he plays well, Zach will have a good chance to be the first Lawrence golfer to advance to the state tournament.”
