MATTAWAN - The Mattawan volleyball team has added another win to its impressive season, with a 3-0 shutout of the Gull Lake Blue Devils.
Mattawan pulled away in the opening set after junior powerhouse, Taylor Rutgers, smashed two kills. The Wildcats scored five unanswered points to jump out to a 12-7 lead. They maintained the lead for the remainder of the set, and earned a 25-16 win.
Although Mattawan eventually won the second set, the Blue Devils didn’t make it easy. Late in the set, an ace from Natalie Foster put Mattawan up 23-13. It looked as if the Wildcats would easily take the set; but the Blue Devils fought back, cutting the lead to 23-18. Mattawan won, 25-20, when Gull Lake hit the ball out of bounds.
The final set was also close. Neither team led by more than two until late in the set, when Taylor Candey served up an ace for the Wildcats, giving Mattawan a slight 16-13 lead. Gull Lake  quickly battled back and tied the set at 17, but Mattawan maintained control and put up several kills that led to the final 25-21 third set win.
Over the weekend, the team hosted the Wildcat Invitational and dominated all three matches, not dropping a single set. The team faced the Blue Devils in the final game and defeated them  25-19, and 25-11.
The Wildcats, currently ranked second in the state in Division 1 volleyball, will move into post season play on Tuesday when they face St. Joe in the first round of districts at Portage Central. The Wildcats defeated St. Joe earlier in the season, 3-0.
