Lawton hosted the Team District wrestling event on Wednesday night, and landed, as expected, in the Championship round squaring off with the Schoolcraft Eagles.
The Blue Devils first had to roll over Lakeside in the semi-final round, and defeat Galesburg-Augusta to advance to their match with the Eagles. Lawton Coach Troy Johnson had a good game plan heading into the day, expecting his team to land exactly where it did. But, unforeseen circumstances left the team three wrestlers short. The Blue Devils fell to the Eagles, 22-54, but Johnson was proud of some great performances from his team. He noted some have improved tremendously since the beginning of the season and did much better than anticipated. Johnson said he has a pretty young team that has shown great heart.  His less experienced grapplers did lose, but they lasted the entire match and lost by fewer points, making the match closer.
Johnson pointed to a couple of girls who have been very instrumental this year, contributing 136 points over the course of the season.  The Crall sisters have competed in the 103- and 112-pound classes. “I can’t thank them enough for coming out and helping our team,” the coach said. “They were very important to our team.”
Earning wins for the Blue Devils were Christian Ferris at 189 lbs., Landyn Vanwyk at 140, Nick Baldwin at 130, Dylan Amm at 125.
The Blue Devil wrestlers hosted the Individual Districts Saturday, and with high hopes for getting a number of the team through to Regionals.
