Redskin wrestlers shine in weekend matches

A very young contingent of the Paw Paw varsity wrestling team brought home the honors from the Wolverine Conference meet and first-ever state girls wrestling finals held Saturday. All freshman and sophomores, each finished among the top five in their matches. They are, from left: sophomore Jackson Kannianen (fourth, 135 lb.), freshman Anthony Bradley (second, 140 lb.), sophomore Mariah Bradley (fifth, girls finals, 119 lb.),  freshman Nico Martinez (first, 152 lb.) and sophomore Alex Leonard (third, 145 lb.

   The annual Wolverine Conference wrestling meet served as a showplace for four young Paw Paw Redskins on the mats Saturday.
   Nico Martinez competing at 152 pounds by unofficial record  became the first-ever freshman Redskin grappler to win a league title. Other top performances were turned in by another freshman, Anthony Bradley, who came in second place at 140 pounds; and sophomores Alex Leonard, with a third place finish at 145, and Jackson Kannianen, who finished fourth in the 135 pound weight class.
   Mariah Bradley, a sophomore on the Paw Paw wrestling team, competed in  Michigan’s first girls wrestling state final meet on Saturday.Wrestling at 119 pounds, Bradley finished fifth in the state in her weight class to become part of the first-ever Girls All-State Wrestling Team.
