Redskin tennis off to a good start

Butch Hindenach -

The Paw Paw boys tennis team opened the 2018-19 season with a tie for second place at the Portland Quad meet last Friday.  North Muskegon took home the first place trophy with 19 points, and the Redskins accounted for 13 points.
Top finishers for Paw Paw included first place berths for Ryen Fusko in No. 4 singles and the second doubles pair of Gabe Rogers and Josh Van Roekel.  Second place Redskins included Cameron Walker in No. 1 singles, Ben Hulst in No. 2 singles, and the Reece Glosik-Wisser and Calvin Johnson in No. 3 doubles.
On Monday, the Redskins, already bitten by the injury bug, were hampered in their performance at the Plainwell tournament.  Ben Hulst had to sit out all three of his matches, and Christian Johnson defaulted against both Grant and Plainwell. The Redskins finished fourth overall with seven points.  Kalamazoo Christian took home the first place hardware with 18 team points.
The best Redskin performance of the day went to the third doubles team of Glosik-Wisser and  Calvin Johnson, who claimed first place, defeating opponents from Grant 7-6 (5), 5-7, 10-7; Kalamazoo Christian 6-4, 1-6, 10-7; and Plainwell 3-6, 6-1, 10-7.  Walker had another good day in the No. 1 singles flight, taking second, defeating Plainwell 6-2, 6-0 and Kalamazoo Christian 2-6, 6-0, 10-7, before falling to Grant 6-0, 6-2.
